Soft Skills Professional Development Training Well Received by Tech Employees.
On May 8, 2016, a soft skills professional development training session, hosted by CHIME at Microsoft in Redmond in collaboration with professional coach and trainer Di Ye, drew an audience of 80 employees from Microsoft and the greater Seattle region.
Over time, many Chinese employees have expressed their interest in improving communication skills to further advance their career. CHIME therefore invited Di Ye, a professional coach and trainer who is also a former program manager at Microsoft and MIT graduate with Chinese/American cross-cultural background, to lead this training event.
To better serve the audience needs, CHIME’s leadership team researched CHIME members’ professional development needs beforehand and shared them with Di Ye. Di then custom-designed the training to address those needs.
This training elicited an interactive, bold, open and honest group dynamic. Di introduced effective communication tools and professional development concepts. In addition, Di also addressed audience’s questions across a wide range of topics including emotion regulation, establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution, discerning and breaking through limiting beliefs, career planning, managing up, and developing leadership qualities. Di’s training was well-contextualized for the audience as she incorporated her personal experiences working in the tech industry as an Asian American and her understanding in Microsoft’s corporate culture.
The training was well received by the audience. Among the many positive feedback received, audience expressed deeper understanding and enthusiasm in how to effectively collaborate and communicate at work place. Many also walked away with an unexpected and renewed mindset about their own career development. CHIME Board will incorporate audience feedback and its members’ needs to organize more professional development events for CHIME members’ benefits.
